Develop the brand: publish or perish

Appropriate branding needs to attract the right people and invest time, money, experience, knowledge, and commitment.

Your personal brand is happening with or without your input

Your personal brand already exists. It is not vain or narcissistic to be intentional about your personal brand. To be intentional about your personal brand as an academic is to carefully curate the aspects of your complex life that fit in with the professional goals you’ve set for yourself.

“Communication – the human connection – is the key to personal and career success.”

Paul J. Meyer

Your personal brand is vital for career progression

A personal brand will help you stand out in the job market. When a recruiter or academic will be on the lookout for their next staff who has to be “cooperative, methodical, and competent in species distribution modeling” then you’ll want them to think about you.

While orchestrating your personal brand is a conscious process, the way that it will be perceived will mostly be unconscious.

You’ll find that people will associate you with specific skills and interests and remember you for it.

Given that your network is your net worth, communicating your personal brand has immeasurable value.

Define your brand

First and foremost, you need to decide what you want your personal brand to convey about you.

Your personal brand should represent something that is unique to you, your personality, your passions, your talents and your dream goal.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want to be known for?

  • If you Google your own name, are you happy with what the search results show about you and your work?

  • How can I promote my research and increase its visibility?

Your own website: Personal websites give you complete control over your content, design, and layout and can increase the visibility of your work

By building your brand throughout your career, you protect yourself from the unpredictable nature of the economy, and gain more career options and opportunities.

And in a time like this, who couldn’t use more opportunity?
